About April Kim Tonin

A native New Yorker, I began drawing as soon as I could walk. My first large scale "works" of art involved decorating the walls of my parents' Brooklyn apartment with crayon and ink. I moved onto covering rolls of drafting paper with drawings of horses because when I wasn't drawing, I was riding. In high school, I began studying life drawing. In between classes, my friends would time me with a stopwatch to see how quickly I could draw caricatures.

These days, I am an artist and an educator. I am the co-author and illustrator of Start Naked, a book inspired by New York artist Lisa Dinhofer's Saturday morning life drawing classes at the National Academy School. To this day, I still take life drawing classes because as an artist, you never stop learning to see.
